Horror Poster Art

Image
I am thrilled to have stumbled onto Wrong Side of the Art today. They have an extensive collection of movie posters, including some ace vintage horror ones. Their cheesy taglines made my week! Watching horror movies is a favourite pastime, but I haven't seen nearly enough of them to tell you more about the films themselves. Below are four choice poster art samples, but for in-depth reviews, scoot on over to Maynard's - I'm sure he has seen them all.

Of Heroes And Villains

Mentioning Halloween without mentioning Halloween  is just not possible. The film crowned Jamie Lee Curtis as The Scream Queen  and so far no one has knocked her off her pedestal yet. To me she is as synonymous to October as  that striped sweater or those masks . I get such a rush watching horror movies. Don't you?

Beaver Fever

I finally got around to watching Zombeavers and it was surprisingly entertaining. Granted, the special effects were totally unrealistic (as you can probably deduce from the movie title), but the acting wasn't as bad as expected, and it had us giggling all the way through. It also provided us with this week's tune:

Beetlegeuse

We joined the Pretoria Mystery Ghost Bus Tour on Saturday night. It was such good, clean fun. On the bus, they played this track, and I've had it stuck in my head ever since.

Slushious

I was VERY skeptic when a friend suggested that I watch Home , because - unless there are subtle comedic cues for the adult audience, my mind wanders off in a different direction. Luckily, what it lacked in dark comedy, it made up for in cuteness. Some scenes were so adorable that it made me uncomfortable, and the dance scenes had me suffocating on giggles. This song from the movie is also a bit catchy. Even if I don't want to admit it in public, I have to. It reminds me of Busta Lime* every single time. *You'll have to watch the movie.

Poltergeist Remake

I don't think you should waste your time on this one, because after watching it I felt so uninspired that I could not even come up with a review of my own. Rather go out (or stay in) and get hold of the original . If you don't want to take my word for it, go read Maynard's Review - maybe he can knock some sense into you.

Occulus

Image
Pic Source: Impawards.com I am not afraid of the dark, and struggle more with weird dreams than I do with nightmares, so I find it laborious discovering good horror these days. As luck would have it, the 2013 film Oculus proved to be less disappointing as I had expected it to be. The plot (a girl set on proving that all is not what it seemed behind her parents' deaths, cue creepy mirror lady), is told at an adequate level of psychologically fucked-up, and without spilling any spoilers, I can tell you there was at least one scene that made me want to throw up in my mouth a little bit. I have to agree with Maynard though - the pace dwindled halfway through, and there were definitely room for improvement (although I am not qualified to speak to its cinematic properties such as camera angles, etc). This movie should be horrifying enough for you if your stomach is not as strong as mine (or if you don't get the same adrenaline kick from fear as I do). And if you do ...

Horrifying Humour

Image
These two Kiwi films turned out to be quite the Double-Feature Treat for us this past Saturday night, and I simply had to tell you about them before I forget! What We Do In The Shadows This is the funniest thing I've seen in some time. The entire cast had me giggling my ass off*, but I don't mean to oversell it and ruin your experience (I think that's what I already did to my cousin before making her watch it with us again on Sunday), so I won't say much about what you should expect, nor will I tell you which were my favourite funny bits... I just think that if you like whatever's dark & unusual, as I do, you should give this one a look-see. *And my heart will forever hold a soft spot for Viago. Housebound Coincidentally, the initial trailer/review I saw for WWDITS, also made a reference to this New Zealand film - so naturally I had to see it too. What I specifically enjoyed about it, is how they mixed in just enough silly dark humou...

August: Osage County

Image
If you've forgotten what it feels like when a heart breaks, take a moment to watch this film. I loved each character regardless of their many, many flaws. I felt the desperation in their pain, and learnt that hiding weakness is definitely not the same thing as being strong. There will be cinematic critics, as always, but I think it was absolutely beautifully done!

I'm Just Not That Into It

Who am I kidding? I'm not that girl. I don't stick to routine  journal-like posts or 'Dear Diary'-type entries. I don't like being hugged and I often enjoy spending time away from other people. My marriage isn't traditional and I love the fact that we both instinctively knew that watching Guardians of the Galaxy in 3D was the perfect choice for celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary (yesterday). I'm not saying that I am somehow "wrong" for not being that into it, or that we should all be cookie-cutter people, because I have no problem with being a bit off-centre. It should be celebrated! I just want to apologise for subjecting you to such half-ass attempts at normality over the past few weeks. I'll try to write better.

Z is for Zombie

Image
Oh, I know...you probably started thinking I   became a zombie (having disappeared from my blogging profile for over a month). Fortunately (unfortunately?) not! Today I'm back with a list of the most entertaining zombie movies out there. According to me anyway (& in spite of the fact that what I should be working on, is my Blog's overall look & feel). I find it extreeeeeeemely difficult to recommend movies without giving away too much of the plot and/or without the use of verbatim script quotes, but I'll try my best. For you. Zombie Movie Line-Up (Note: I thumb-sucked the scene titles.) Shaun of the Dead will forever be one of the funniest zombie movies I've seen so far!!! Those Brits just know exactly how to tickle my funny bone and I have not yet met anyone else who saw the film & disliked it. This film also proved to be one of those that my sister & I immediately adopted as a cinematic educational tool. Everyone we knew, heard about i...

Horror Never Gets Old (Update)

Image
I cannot believe I left this beauty off of my original  Horror List ! Seriously - I shrieked, I laughed, I gagged. Check it.

Horror Never Gets Old

Image
Only two critical factors can impede my enjoyment of any given horror film: a) The acting and/or lighting must be so acutely terrible that I literally cannot continue watching the full first 5 minutes of it without reaching an OCD level of need-to-get-up-and-switch-it-off;  and b) I must be in a very distracted mood (ie unable to get lost in the story by activating my selective hearing powers*). But I've proclaimed my love for Horror before .  Then  Braintainment Magazine's article in their 15/2014 issue titled 'Outdated Horror' (with additional info on  this Dutch site) got me thinking about the top 10 scary movies (and mini series) I will probably love forever (and will re-watch any time), so I simply have to share them with you: P.S.  If you don't know which horror films are worth watching, have a look @ Maynard's blog . * A trait for which I'm quite famous for amongst my friends & family.  I can ...

Horrific Favourites

Image
So I'm still on a bit of a terror-junkie high after watching the remake of Evil Dead last night.  Loved it, because I think the original version ended up as a form of hilariously funny cult classic gore (for my generation anyway) and I love how they recently remade it so that it is as horrific & scary as they probably intended to originally. ...which brings me to my next point:  Why am I such a horror nerd?  What makes me go back for more again and again despite the fact that I feel like crapping my pants while being nailed to my seat every single time I watch a scary movie?   Margarita Tartakovsky made some valid arguments on this online.  So does Science Daily ;  but mainly I feel that watching horrors is just my own personal way of experiencing an adrenaline rush.  I hate heights, small spaces & actually fearing for my life - but I love being scared while watching a film or reading a book.  Having studied accounting I'm prepr...
