We joined the Pretoria Mystery Ghost Bus Tour on Saturday night. It was such good, clean fun. On the bus, they played this track, and I've had it stuck in my head ever since.

Danger Point:

South African Lighthouse No. 8 ...and a Ghost Ship Photo from Cape Whale Coast Commissioned on New Years Day of 1895, the Danger Point Lighthouse is located in the Overberg, near Gansbaai. I was thrilled to read about the Flying Dutchman connection, but before we venture into the world of myth & legend, let's first deal with the facts: Before the lighthouse was built, ships perished near this part of the coast. There are seven ships believed to have sunk off this part of our coast*, and the most well known vessel is the HMS Birkenhead, which struck an unmapped rock at sea on the morning of 26 February 1852 (around 2am). Of all the souls on board, more than 440 men lost their lives (all the women and children were brought to safety). A monument recording the aforementioned tragic event was erected at the lighthouse, and every year on 26 February, a commemorative service is held. Cape Recife:

South African Lighthouse No. 5 This is one seriously photogenic zebra-striped lighthouse. It has been sitting at the south entrance of Algoa Bay, as the third oldest lighthouse in South Africa, since 1 April 1851, warning sailors of the Thunderbolt Reef*. Photo by Randall Langenhoven on  SouthAfrica.net Despite its good looks set against the backdrop of the beautiful Eastern Cape landscape, there is an  eerie history surrounding this lighthouse, which obviously attracts me to it even more, and I hope to visit it in person one day soon. Feast your eyes: Photo by Bevan Langley The Lighthouse photographed on a cloudy Day. Beach view photo of the lighthouse from Cape Recife's website . Leigh Langman's moonrise photo of the lighthouse, taken at sunset - Flickr Humpback whales are also known to breach there - as you can see in this photo by Lloyd Edwards via  Raggy Charters . *According to SouthAfrica.net , "The deadly spine of rocks is...

Resident Office Ghost

Image
It's the month of Halloween ...isn't it exciting! I just really wish we celebrated the playful holiday with such gusto as the Americans do every year. Then this morning the strangest thing started happening at the office. We have door bells at each entrance for security purposes, so when the bell rings you can either walk up to the gate & unlock it, or you can use one of the remote devices some of us have in our possession during office hours. I am one of those entrusted with such a little device (basically it looks like any other motorised gate remote like those you might have at home). Due to the fact that I'm normally one of the first staff members in the office, I have to admit that I've gotten so used to the bell ringing every few seconds around 8 am (staff reporting for duty) that I sometimes press my remote button before I actually see who's at the door. [Lax in terms of safety, I know, so rest assured I'll be more careful next time....
