Paradise

Have I mentioned the significance of September 1st yet? Well, in South Africa we celebrate it as the first day of Spring . And each year since 2013, my husband & I also celebrate our wedding anniversary on the same date (exactly two years before that, to the day, he asked me to marry him). It has less to do with Spring Time being synonymous with "the birds & the bees", and more to do with the fact that Franscois chose this date because he'll remember it easier than any other one. Four years this Friday. The poopies  & I are such lucky ladies! You can buy the original on Etsy .

The Cheating Effect

If you want saucy details, I'm sorry to tell you, but I'm not at liberty to say. Right now I'm dealing with a case of dishonesty, which once again reared its ugly head in my  life. And once again, I'm not at liberty to reveal details, because I'm stuck with a secret that's been forced on me by inconsiderate assholes. A secret I never wanted to be privy to. It got the cogs in the ol' noggin' going, though, so I want to tell you why I think that cheating is a lot like drunk driving . Cheaters always think they can keep affairs and their repercussions safely cushioned behind a multitude of lies. They don't realise that once they get behind the wheel, they no longer control anything. Their sordid dealings crash into innocent people as they speed along without any consideration for the lives of others. Even young children get run over by the things they see (more than most adults realise). These are great children. Children, who look left and ri...

How Do You Wake Up?

They say that it's " THE APP THAT WILL TRANSFORM YOUR TIME WITH GOD ", but it turns out that it's the App that changed my life. I'm a '90s teen suicide and date rape survivor, and after my first failed engagement I was sure that the worst times were finally behind me, but my real run of "bad luck" actually barged in with full force five years ago. An inauguration into the Dead Dad's Club is never a welcoming experience. In fact, on Wednesday morning, 13 July 2011, I got sucker-punched into it. No, wait. It was more like I lost a Slap Bet . (It keeps hitting me right in the heart when I least expect it.) Since then I've lost a cousin to teen suicide, I almost lost my only sister to meningitis, my best friend finally stopped waiting for me to reconnect, and then my mother's stage four cancer diagnosis came at a time when my young marriage was suffering a slow death. I was so out of it. I felt nothing. I sat across my husband after...

I'm Just Not That Into It

Who am I kidding? I'm not that girl. I don't stick to routine  journal-like posts or 'Dear Diary'-type entries. I don't like being hugged and I often enjoy spending time away from other people. My marriage isn't traditional and I love the fact that we both instinctively knew that watching Guardians of the Galaxy in 3D was the perfect choice for celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary (yesterday). I'm not saying that I am somehow "wrong" for not being that into it, or that we should all be cookie-cutter people, because I have no problem with being a bit off-centre. It should be celebrated! I just want to apologise for subjecting you to such half-ass attempts at normality over the past few weeks. I'll try to write better.

If You See My Husband, Tell Him This...

We've been seeing very little of each other lately. Other than the few minutes before & after we sleep, we've been drifting by each other through the fog created by our social activities, which are almost all aligned with our affinity for contrasting pastimes (he's much more into anything & everything "geeky" and/or related to off-road cycling than I will probably ever be) as well as the difference between our normal working hours. I'm not too perturbed. Yet*. I just find it very difficult to hint towards what I want when not in his personal space. And this year, for Valentine's I want the whole shebang:  flowers delivered to my office, candy, dinner AND a movie...bar the stuffed toy. Yes, yes, yes. Valentine's day is such a commercialisation of what everyone else wants love to look like; and maybe wanting - so badly - to be a good feminist & believer in equality means that I shouldn't really care about it, but I can't hel...

These Boots Were Made for Wallking Too

I came across this in my inbox this morning; and because I think every one of us needs to be reminded that sometimes it's best to just walk away, I decided to care & share... 3 Easy Steps to Creating Your Walk Away Shoes {Click on Title Above to Read the Other Blogger's Post}

The Girl Who Didn't Exist

As I've mentioned in some of my previous posts, my husband & I are newlyweds (12 years after we met, we finally got hitched on 1 Sep 2013); but our honeymoon period is far from what I expected it to be. Apart from the bed & breakfast treat we received from our  venue  as a special inclusion on our wedding day package, it's basically been business as usual in the Hallatt/Weideman household. No flowers delivered to my office, no moonlit dinners, no sand between our toes or sun on our skin. We're just too flat broke & are now saving up for a belated honeymoon + first anniversary combo getaway sometime next year. Even if I have to say so myself, we've both been absolute troopers dealing with this non-traditional honeymoon arrangement. Not complaining (even though we want to) & relishing our own form of speed dinner dating (usually of the fast food variety, eaten in front of the telly - or even in bed on the nights one/both of us come home from work too...
