Guns Guns Guns

Image
How infuriating! It's 2017. Something should have been done about gun violence by now. Instead, we woke up on Monday in the wake of the Las Vegas  mass shooting  and a rising Marikana  death toll . Many people are shocked and saddened. As a global spectator, I seem to have skipped right into the Anger Stage. I'm angry that hearts are breaking in grief. I'm angry that people still choose to hurt other people. And I'm angry that those in positions of authority with the power to initiate change are allowing this to happen in exchange for their gun-loving voters. PC: QuoteFancy

Weekly Quotable: Reality

Image
For me, avoiding reality works best when turning a blind eye to the serious news on social media. With all the Trump & Zuma news reports coming at me, I feel like I'm falling down the rabbit hole. As tempting as it is to stay in my private bubble, away from it all, ignoring it won't make it go away.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, U.S.A.

Image
PC: Jatinkumar Thakkar The original lighthouse was constructed in Bristol, Maine, using saltwater in 1827. It soon started crumbling so in 1835 it had to be replaced with a new structure, built using fresh water. And thank goodness for that! It's gorgeous. Pic Source Looking at the rock that slopes downward to the sea, it's quite obvious why this lighthouse was built in the first place. No ship's bow would survive that coastline if it came upon it without warning. Pic Source Volunteers open the tower to the public daily between 10:30 am and 17:00 pm, weather permitting , and you can climb it free of charge. That's if you are able to make your way all the way over there. I resign myself to the fact that I can only view it in photographs like the ones I posted here - and with the WebCam . PC: John Bald

There are many weeks that I find myself on the brink of giving up on this whole weekly lighthouse post thing , but the moment I look at a new lighthouse photo, I fall in love all over again. This week's beauty is located near the City of Falmouth, Massachusetts: PC: Ed King PC: Enzo Figueres (left), Roupen Baker (right) PC: Alexey Sergeev

Trump-Stumped

By now everyone knows Trump won. #@(*#$#&^*&@*! It's OK. I'm Ok. *eye twitch* Inhale. Exhale. Instead of thinking about That Man and his cockeyed policies / beliefs. Read this instead - and remember to breathe. Pic Source:  Pixabay

Donald Trumps Zuma

Before I start commenting on that US Election Candidate, let me first say that  Vanity Fair Magazine  is my new favourite Monthly. It's everything any woman could want: yes, it has celeb pieces, fashion advertorials, and pop commentary, but more than that, it also feeds the intellect with well written, in-depth articles such as ' Whose N.R.A. is it ?' (Sarah Ellison), ' Snakes on a Campaign ' (Nicholas Shaxson) and ' St. George's Hidden Dragons ' (Benjamin Wallace), to name a few. They know what women want (hint: it is more than frilly things, pretty colours and gossip). I am just disappointed that I live way down here, because the most recent issue I could get my hands on, was that of August 2016 - and thanks to the weakness of the South African Rand, I had to pay roughly four times what I would for a local glossy. As for my thoughts on Ol' Donald... Susan Pace Hamill, as quoted by Nicholas Shaxson in Vanity Fair August 2016 I am...

Marblehead, U.S.A.

Image
I really enjoyed exploring the South African lighthouses with you online, but we have a lot of ground to cover if we want to see the rest of the flashing giants out there. For our next stretch, I will be taking a more random and visual approach. I'll be jumping back and forth across the globe and you can look forward to feasting your eyes on the breathtaking landscapes and structural beauty the world of lighthouses has to offer! Marblehead Lighthouse Lake Erie (Ohio) Photo Credit: Ron Skinner Confession Time: Geography has never been my strong point. My sense of direction is deplorable - my boss once joked that I don't need a GPS, I need a driver - and it takes a lot of repetitive reading and map checking before I am able to recall locations and borders, etc. It was no surprise then, when I read that Marblehead Lighthouse is in Ohio, that I had to go onto Google Maps to see why Ohio even had a lighthouse. Finding out about the Great Lakes , and having a loo...
